Coral Gables, "The City Beautiful", is located in Miami-Dade County and was originally developed by George Merrick, in the 1920's. His idea was to develop an aesthetically beautiful city based on Mediterranean Revival Architecture. His plan featured broad tree-lined streets, roundabouts, and delicate bridges. Today Coral Gables expands South with waterfront properties along Biscayne Bay, and North to Tamiami Trail, just two miles from Miami International Airport. Today the city maintains much of its original charm and luster, with beautiful homes throughout the area. While not as populated as it’s neighboring City of Miami, Coral Gables is actually larger in square miles. There are fine hotels as well as wonderful shopping areas including the famous Shopping district of Miracle Mile and The Village of Merrick Park, a newer upscale outdoor shopping area. One of the greatest city monuments is the Biltmore Hotel, inspired by the Seville Cathedral in Spain. The Biltmore is a world class hotel hosting visitors from all over the world. Locals flock to the hotel spa offering yearly memberships and a beautiful coral pool. Known locally as “The Gables”, the city has much to offer for all walks of life, with a major University, a strong commerce, and stately residential homes offering peace and tranquility.

Coral Gables History
|
Coral Gables is one of America’s most unique cities, as it was one of the Nation’s first fully planned communities. Its founder, George Merrick was a county commissioner, helping to shape the streets of Miami. He acquired 3,000 acres land, including citrus groves from his family’s grapefruit business, along with pine tree acerage in the surrounding area. Inspired by The City Beautiful movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries, George Merrick and talented architects Phineas Paist and H. George Fink planned a Mediterranean-inspired city distinctive in beauty that would offer every amenity to its residents and a commercial district that would become a beacon for international business. By 1925, Merrick’s salesperson sold over $100 Million in property. The first homes were built with limestone quarried from what is now the Venitian Pool. The development gained national attention, and by 1926, and the Gables had claimed about 10,000 acres, including waterfront property along Biscayne Bay. The following year, additional milestones were reached including the groundbreaking of the University of Miami, the opening of The Biltmore Hotel and Tahiti Beach, which is now the exclusive development of Cocoplum. During the 1950’s the city saw another boom, and the city expanded with new residential development in the central and southern areas of the city. These homes were more modern in architecture for their time. Today, and in recent decades, the city protects its rich heritage with historic preservation and restoration programs. Large buildings continue to appear in the downtown sector, and Coral Gables is a notable city of importance.

Coral Gables Housing
|
Homes in Coral Gables area range in price and design. Original homes built in the area are referred to as “Old Spanish” as they resemble the original Mediterranean style of the city plan. The oldest homes in the city reside in the northern district and around Coral Way and main streets such as Greenway Drive, Alhambra Circle, and Granada Blvd. During the post war boom, homes were built with a more modern style for their time. Many of these are generally located but not exclusive to the central and south Gables areas, and around the University of Miami, as well as the Riviera and Biltmore areas. During the 1960s and 70’s, development continued in the South and Central areas and in Gables By The Sea, which is adjacent to The Village of Pinecrest. During the 1980s and through to the 21st Century, development has continued in and around the South Gables and with luxury homes along the waterfront of Biscayne Bay. Home prices and sizes range from moderately priced 2 bedroom homes to luxurious mansions with many amenities. Condominiums and townhomes are also prevalent in certain districts of the city. There are newer projects being developed with “green building design” while maintaining the beautiful asthetic of the Gables. There is a variety to suit any need in and around the area. During the recent downturn in the real estate market, many areas of Coral Gables have maintained their value, or have not been hit as hard as surrounding areas. They say real estate is all about location, and Coral Gables has it.
